FLUG DURCH DIE NACHT, 1980
Im fünften Jahr betritt Forum Expanded die Bühne: Das Verhältnis von Performance und Film bildet einen neuen Schwerpunkt. Mit mehr als 40 Film-, Installations- und Performanceprojekten aus 20 Ländern schafft das Programm aber nicht nur künstlerisch, sondern auch geopolitisch Raum für neue Perspektiven.
So behandelt das installative Projekt Cinema City unter der Federführung der indischen Filmemacherin, Kuratorin und Aktivistin Madhusree Dutta in einigen Kinofoyers das Verhältnis des urbanen Raums zum Kino. Der Omnibusfilm EMBARGO PROJECT junger Filmemacher aus Nordamerika, Neuseeland und Australien thematisiert die Marginalisierung indigener Künstler; TANGIER 8 ist eine Zusammenarbeit von Filmemachern und Schriftstellern in Marokko, und im Rahmen einer Podiumsdiskussion widmet sich Forum Expanded der derzeitigen Situation künstlerischen Schaffens im Iran.
Mit einem Blick auf die Wiederkehr des strukturellen Kinos in der zeitge-nössischen künstlerischen und kuratorischen Praxis gibt Forum Expanded dem Bewegtbild seine Zeitlichkeit zurück. Eine Ausstellung der frühen Filme von Heinz Emigholz sowie zahlreiche Arbeiten im Kino und in Ausstellungsräumen (Mark Lewis in der Botschaft von Kanada, Heike Baranowsky bei Barbara Weiss oder Gusmão & Paiva in der Akademie der Künste) setzen der herrschenden These von der eingeschränkten Aufmerksamkeit des Zuschauers überraschend viel Kontemplation entgegen.
Zeit und Raum werden von Körpern gebildet, die sie durchschreiten, und so wird das Kino zuweilen zum Bühnenraum. Das spiegelt sich nicht nur in der Praxis eines Altmeisters des strukturellen Films wie James Benning, der eine frühere Arbeit als Performance präsentiert, sondern auch in der Beschäftigung von Performance-Künstlern mit Film. So findet Forum Expanded erstmals auch im Theater statt. Ganz besonders darf man sich auf Christoph Schlingensief freuen, der im HAU – Hebbel am Ufer den Stummfilm L'INFERNO (Italien 1911) zeigen und kommentieren wird.
Eine historische Entdeckung ist der Film FLUG DURCH DIE NACHT (BRD 1980) der damaligen dffb-Studentin Ilona Baltrusch. Zwei Personen durchstreifen darin ein bühnenhaft inszeniertes West-Berlin und bringen in philosophischen Endlosschlaufen das typische Endzeitge-fühl der 80er Jahre zum Ausdruck. Gleichzeitig ist FLUG DURCH DIE NACHT in seiner Verspieltheit, mit der er den Regeln des Films und Theaters trotzt, sehr zeitgemäß.
Präsentationsorte von Forum Expanded sind 2010 neben dem Arsenal im Filmhaus die Akademie der Künste am Hanseatenweg, der Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart, das Haus der Kulturen der Welt (mit der transme-diale), die Temporäre Kunsthalle (mit dem Künstler Phil Col-lins), die Botschaft von Kanada, das HAU – Hebbel am Ufer, die daadgale-rie, die Galerien Barbara Weiss und Tanya Leighton sowie die Foyers der Berlinale-Kinos Delphi und CineStar Cubix am Alexanderplatz.
Forum Expanded wurde in diesem Jahr kuratiert von Stefanie Schulte Strathaus (Leitung), Anselm Franke, Nanna Heidenreich und Bettina Steinbrügge.

Form Expanded enters the stage in its fifth year with a new focus on the relation of performance and film. With more than 40 film, installation and performance projects from 20 countries, the program offers new perspectives not only in artistic but also geopolitical terms.
The installation project Cinema City under the auspices of Indian filmmaker, curator and activist Madhusree Dutta, for example, deals with the relation of urban space and cinema in several movie theater foyers. The omnibus film Embargo Project by young filmmakers from North America, New Zealand and Australia addresses the marginalization of indigenous artists; TANGIER 8 is a collaboration between filmmakers and writers in Morocco; and, within the frame of a panel discussion, Forum Expanded examines the current situation of artists in Iran.
With a view to the return of structural cinema in contemporary artistic and curatorial practices, Forum Expanded seeks to return temporality to the moving image. An exhibition of early films by Heinz Emigholz as well as numerous works in movie houses and exhibition spaces (Mark Lewis in the Canadian Embassy, Heike Baranowsky at Barbara Weiss or Gusmão & Paiva at the Akademie der Künste) counter the prevailing assumption of the viewer's limited attention with a surprising amount of contemplation offers.
Time and space are established by bodies traversing them, and in this way, cinema at times becomes a stage. This is not only reflected in the practice of a grandmaster of structural film such as James Benning, who presents an earlier work as a performance, but also in the way performance artists deal with film. For the first time, a theater will be a venue of Forum Expanded. We are particularly looking forward to Christoph Schlingensief, who at HAU – Hebbel am Ufer will present and comment on the silent movie L'INFERNO (Italy 1911).
The film FLUG DURCH DIE NACHT (FRG 1980) of the former dffb student Ilona Baltrusch is a historical discovery. Two persons roam a theater-like West Berlin, expressing the typical apocalyptic feeling of the 1980s in endless philosophical loops. At the same time, the playfulness with which FLUG DURCH DIE NACHT defies the rules of cinema and theater make it extremely up-to-date.
The presentation venues of Forum Expanded in 2010 are, apart from Arsenal, the Filmhaus of the Akademie der Künste on Hanseatenweg, Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart, the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (with transmediale), the Temporäre Kunsthalle (with the artist Phil Collins), the Canadian Embassy, HAU – Hebbel am Ufer, the daadgalerie, the galleries Barbara Weiss and Tanya Leighton, as well as the foyers of the Berlinale cinemas Delphi and CineStar Cubix on Alexanderplatz.
