Ernie Gehr

Serene Velocity, 1970

Ernie Gehr was born in New York City in 1943. He began to make films in 1967. Until 1988 he lived in New York City; since then he has been living in California and teaching at the San Francisco Art Institute. He presently works with both film and digital video.

„Ernie Gehr makes films so unsentimental and lucid, that they can serve as fundamental texts on what film is and how we experience it. By undermining the filmic illusion, Gehr investigates their materiality. Where content is subdued, the physical nature of the image stands out even more distinctly. Gehr's work is of a clarity and perfection, which no other reductionist filmmaker has attained. Typically he uses one or two simple principles in order to transform the screen into a sensual field of concentrated energy. One could also say, he managed to achieve more with less than any other filmmaker in the history of the medium.“(Jim Hoberman)
