Hollis Frampton

Zorn's Lemma, 1970

Born 1936 in Ohio, raised in Massachusetts, where he got to know Frank Stella and Carl Andre. After studying a variety of subjects between 1954 and 1957 at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, Frampton moved to Washington, where he became a student of Ezra Pound. A move to New York brought him into the realm of Stella and Andre and he started working in photography. Following this, he embarked on creating filmic works, of which ZORN'S LEMMA is probably the best known.

His work is structured into several, large cycles, such as HAPAX LEGOMENA and the MAGELAN-cycle, which is laid out as consisting of 271 films, which, following Framptons idea, were to be shown on as many consecutive days. Apart from working creatively Frampton started teaching at State University New York in 1973. Hollis Frampton was one of the most important combatants for the cause of New American Cinema. He died in 1984.
