1984 - 90 Studies in photo design at the Fachhochschule Dortmund
With two periods of study in London – 1988/89, Harrow College of Higher Education and 1990/91, Chelsea College of Art, Fine Art, Mixed Media – she finished her Master of Art in 1991.
Until 1995 Silke Helmerding was working in Düsseldorf as a freelance artist and photo designer.
Since 1991 her work has been seen in exhibitions and festivals both in Germany and abroad, from 1992 to 1995 she taught at the School for Art and Theater in Neuss, 1994/95 she was a member of the Filmwerkstatt Düsseldorf e.V., 1996/97 curator and co-organizer of the women's photography gallery, Silberblick, in Berlin.
Since 2000 she has held several teaching positions at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig, the Silpakorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, and the Khon Kaen University, Khon Kaen, Thailand. In 2001 Artist in Residence, Khon Kaen University, Khon Kaen, Thailand.
In 2005 guest professor for photography at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig and lecturer at the University of Kassel.
The artist has been living and working in Berlin since 1995.
