To fit with our Magical History Tour and as part of our ongoing 70mm program, we are screening Hal Ashby’s live concert film LET’S SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER (USA 1982/83), which was released in Germany six months before the US premiere with the title ROCKS OFF. It shows the Rolling Stones on tour in the US in 1981 after a six-year concert break there – this became the biggest and most successful music tour to date. Hal Ashby concentrates largely on what’s happening on the stage and is uninterested in backstage scenes and interviews. The open air concert on 13th December 1981 at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona with a 60,000-strong audience was captured by 14 Panavision cameras, while the shows on 5th and 6th November at the Meadowlands’ Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey drew 20,000 spectators and were filmed by 20 cameras. We’ll be showing a release print with 6-track magnetic stereo sound (hjf) (28.3.)
