Harun Farocki: Year by Year / Side by Side (3)

"Year by Year/Side by Side" is the most comprehensive retrospective of Harun Farocki’s cinema and television work to date. Alongside the exhibition "Harun Farocki: Mit anderen Mitteln – By Other Means" (curated by Antje Ehmann and Carlos Guerra) at the neuer berliner kunstverein, the temporary "Farocki Now" academy organized by the Harun Farocki Institut at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt and the silent green Kulturquartier and the recent publication of his incomplete autobiography, the program gives audiences a chance to become acquainted, or reacquainted, with the documentarian's oeuvre and all the many directions it points in. Numerous productions thought lost or seldom shown were able to be researched in archives and brought together.

We continue the retrospective with numerous film screenings and discussions from November 20-30.

Magical History Tour
 – Painting in Motion

Paintings, sketches, etchings, drawings and the people that create them have always been a point of reference for filmmakers, cinematographers, scriptwriters, and not least production designers. Using film to breathe movement into motionless pictorial art provides the visual worlds of the original artworks with new contexts and paves the way for a whole range of different semantic and perceptional shifts. Grappling with aspects of the lives and creative processes of artists and stylistic movements in cinematic terms opens up new perspectives on art history as an echo chamber for the production of film images. This month's Magical History Tour is showing examples of the productive relationship between painting and film that span eight decades.

Gadalla Gubara

Sudanese filmmaker Gadalla Gubara (1921–2008) shot films from the 50s until his death with which he documented the political and social development of Sudan over more than 50 years. His cinematic legacy was able to be digitized in 2013 and 2016 by Arsenal with the help of funding from the Foreign Office’s Cultural Heritage program. On November 22, Arsenal presents his first feature TAJOUJE (Sudan 1979) from his oeuvre, which was shot in one of the most remote regions of Sudan and is based on a famous Sudanese love story. His final film LES MISÉRABLES (Sudan 2007), which will be shown at SAVVY Contemporary the following day, was shot by Gubara at the age of 87 with the help of his daughter Sara Gubara, who we will also be welcoming to the screening of the film. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo.
