Book presentation: Wilfried Berghahn – film critic

At the time of his premature death, Wilfried Berghahn (19301964) was considered the intellectual center of gravity for progressive German-speaking film criticism, whose most important forum - the magazine "Filmkritik" - he ran alongside Enno Patalas. Berghahn's honed and slightly polemical texts testify to his feeling for new formal trends and his pronounced awareness of the social and political dimensions of cinema. They examine and criticize the state of film culture in Germany and make an appeal for a fundamental renewal of cinema. Edition 20 of the series "Film & Schrift" offers a selection of Berghahn's essays, reviews and commentaries. We will screen two shorts by Herbert Vesely whose commentary was written by Berghahn: MENSCHEN IM ESPRESSO (1958)and EIN WOCHENENDE (1959) explore the behavior of Germans at leisure. (mw)(22.6.)
