The DEFA Foundation Presents

DIE SONNENBRUCKS, 1951

Eduard Clemens Franz Freiherr von Wangenheim aka Eduard von Winterstein (1871–1961) was already a respected actor in the 1920s. Under the Third Reich, he was treated with suspicion due to his son Gustav being active as a communist in Soviet exile. After the war, he became a celebrated East Germany theater actor. In 1935, von Winterstein acted in the melodrama DAS MÄDCHEN VOM MOORHOF(Detlef Sierck), a psychological crime story based on a novel by Selma Lagerlöf. DIE SONNENBRUCKS (Georg C. Klaren, East Germany 1951) takes the responsibility of science towards political decisions as its theme. For the role of Professor Sonnenbruck, Eduard von Winterstein received the prize for best actor at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in 1951. The film series "Breaks and Continuities" is being shown in collaboration with the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung and is dedicated to twelve actors who were active at Ufa before 1945 and went on to act at DEFA after the war.
