Larry Gottheim: Sublime evocations

KNOT/NOT, 2019

In its elaborate search for an authentic language, which sublimely opens up an atmospheric space of perception, the oeuvre of the US avant-garde filmmaker Larry Gottheim is headstrong in the best sense of the word. Time breathes in FOG LINE (1970) and BARN RUSHES (1971) and the invisible penetrates the space as image and experience. Silence can be heard. CHANTS AND DANCES (1991–2017), which comprises material from almost 25 years, presents a round dance of Haitian stories and voodoo rites. Audio and visual elements come together as an associative montage. In KNOT/NOT (2019), which will enjoy its world premiere, disparate material from all kinds of sources blends into an evocative image with a song by the Catalan artist Eli Ningú. (ara) (7.3.)
