arsenal 3 – Continuing with a New Concept from August 15th

First a members’ platform, then a temporary online cinema: at the start of the lockdown in mid-March, we swiftly retooled our streaming service for Arsenal members first founded last autumn into a publicly accessible virtual cinema. Over the last 14 weeks, seven programs each consisting of around 20 films from our collection were presented – we were just as overwhelmed by the solidarity shown by the filmmakers who made their works available to us as we were by the public attention and enthusiasm generated by the platform. We were also very happy to host the film program “Latitude – Camera Memory for Human Forgetfulness” curated by Karina Griffith as part of the Latitude Festival put on by the Goethe-Institut.

arsenal 3 was our immediate reaction to the closing of the Arsenal 1 & 2 cinemas at Potsdamer Platz and the virtual cinema space was an experiment for us – one worked on by many, supported by many (and not just via donations) and which brought together many cinemagoers – a true community project!

As part of the process of reopening the cinema auditoria, arsenal 3 is now to change once again. As a space for associations, reactions and footnotes, we will in the future be showing films at arsenal 3 that are directly related to Arsenal’s activities, whether the cinema program, our distribution range or our archival work. The focus isn’t so much on extending specific cinema series into the virtual space nor on streaming recent acquisitions or new digitizations. Instead, we’re once again starting an experiment, with the idea being to progressively hone the relationship between analogue cinema and digital space. All of this costs money, so that from now on, we will have to charge a fee and hope for your understanding to this end.

arsenal 3 reopens on August 15th.

The starting point for this summer at arsenal 3 – how could it be any different with our cinemas reopening? – is the program focus at Arsenal 1: Black Light and Forum 50, the two film series that had to be curtailed in March and which we are now picking up where we left off.
