Das Video rekonstruiert die vier Monate, die der Regisseur Wong Kar-wai mit seiner Crew in Argentinien verbrachte, um den Film Happy Together zu drehen. Er kam im August 1996 in Argentinien, ‘auf der anderen Seite der Welt’, an und begann mit der Suche nach geeigneten Drehorten. Bevor die Dreharbeiten begannen, fühlte Wong sich in der Welt voller fremder Sprachen und der ihm unbekannten Tango-Musik verloren.
Im Frühjahr 1998 flogen die Dokumentarfilmemacher Kwan Pun-leung und Amos Lee nach Argentinien, um erneut die Orte aufzusuchen, an denen gedreht worden war.
Der 60minütige Film fängt triviale und weniger triviale Momente der Produktion ein: Schauspieler Tony Leung und Leslie Cheung beim Tango-Unterricht oder in einer Bar beim Kaffeetrinken, eine Unterhaltung zwischen Wong Kar-wai und Kameramann Chris Doyle. Zusätzlich sieht man Ausschnitte aus Happy Together, die nicht in den Film aufgenommen wurden. Die Filmemacher Kwan Pun-Leung und Amos Lee schneiden dokumentarisches Material und Spielfilmszenen ineinander, spielen mit der Chronologie und erzeugen so ungewöhnlich intensive Momente.

Buenos Aires Zero Degree: the making of Happy Together recreates the four months that director Wong Kar-Wai and his crew spent in Argentina.
In August 1996, Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai landed in Argentina, on the other side of the world and began scouting for locations. Before shooting started, Wong was lost in a world of foreign languages, with only tango music in the air he barely recognized.
In early 1998, documentary filmmakers Kwan Pun-leung and Amos Lee flew to Argentina, to revisit the locations where the film was shot. The sixty-minute production captures trivial and some not-so-trivial moments from the production, from actors Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung taking tango lessons and sipping coffee in a bar, to behind-the-scenes chats between Wong Kar-Wai and cinematographer Chris Doyle, along with some unseen footage. The filmmakers crosscut reality with fiction, play with chronology, and manage to create unusually intimate moments that would have been difficult to capture during the actual shooting of Happy Together.

Der Multimediaveteran Kwan Pun-leung hat an der Hongkong Academy for Performing Arts und Soziologie am Lingnan College in Hongkong studiert. Er ist ein vielversprechender Standphotograph und hat für verschiedene Hongkong-Filme, Kulturzeitschriften, Theaterproduktionen und Mixed-Media Produktionen photographiert. 1997 arbeitete er zum ersten Mal als Kameramann bei Stanley Kwans Hold You Tight. Kwan Pun-leung war auch bei Stanley Kwan neuestem Film The Island Tales als Kameramann tätig. BUENOS AIRES ZERO DEGREE ist Kwan Pun-leungs erste Regiearbeit.
Amos Lee Yip-wah wurde 1970 geboren und gehört der neuen Generation unabhängiger Film- und Videomacher Hongkongs an. Er arbeitet außerdem als Graphikdesigner. 1994 führte er sein erstes selbstgeschriebenes Theaterstück auf. Zwei Jahre später begann er mit bewegten Bildern zu experimentieren. Seitdem dreht er Musikvideos für taiwanesische und Hongkonger Sänger, die auf MTV ausgestrahlt werden. Außerdem gestaltet er Filme für Videoleinwände bei Popkonzerten und Filmtrailer.
Bei vielen Gelegenheiten hat Amos Lee nicht nur als Ausstatter, sondern auch als Regisseur und Cutter gearbeitet. Im selben Zeitraum wie BUENOS AIRES ZERO DEGREE drehte er A Tender War, eine Video-Adaptation einer preisgekrönten Theateraufführung des Théatre du Pif.

Kwan Pun-leung, a Hong Kong multimedia veteran, is a technical art graduate of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and also a sociology graduate of the Lingnan College, Hong Kong. Kwan made his motion picture debut in 1997, as the director of photography on the acclaimed Asian director Stanley Kwans Hold You Tight. Kwan recently was the director of photography on Stanley Kwans latest film The Island Tales. BUENOS AIRES ZERO DEGREE is his directorial debut.
Amos Lee Yip-wah was born in 1970. He is a member of Hong Kongs new generation of independent film-and videomakers and a graphic designer. In 1994, Amos wrote and directed his first theatre production. Two years later he started experimenting with moving images and started a career as an independent video artist. Amos work has been extensively seen in many Hong Kong and Taiwanese singers MTV productions, pop concert video wall displays and movie trailers. On many occasions, Amos not only served as the art director but also as the director and editor of the pieces. He recently co-directed A Tender War a video adaptation of an award-winning stage performance by Theatre Du Pif.
