1914: Der erst 14jährige Schiffsjunge Hans Warns bricht zu seiner ersten großen Fahrt auf. Die Reise geht nach Chile: Dort soll der Hamburger Viermastsegler ‘Herbert’ Salpeter für das Deutsche Reich bunkern. Der Erste Weltkrieg steht vor der Tür. Mit an Bord hat Hans seinen einzigen Besitz – eine Fotokamera.
Die Fotografie wird für ihn zur Leidenschaft. So entstehen während seines langen und oft wechselhaften Lebens auf sämtlichen Ozeanen dieser Erde einzigartige Dokumente vom Alltag an Bord und von seinen Reisestationen: Internierung während des Ersten Weltkriegs in Chile, Rückkehr ins inflationsgeschüttelte Nachkriegsdeutschland 1921, verkappte Transportfahrten für die ‘Legion Condor’ während des Spanischen Bürgerkriegs 1936–1939, Blockadebrecherfahrten nach Norwegen zu Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs bis 1940, Kaperfahrten im Südatlantik auf einem Großkampfschiff der deutschen Kriegsmarine 1940–1941, Nachkriegszeit und Lebensabend in Bremen.
Der Spielfilm erzählt das abenteuerliche Leben des Hans Warns mit seinen eigenen Originalaufnahmen und historischen Musik- und Tondokumenten sowie Nachinszenierungen in der Ästhetik und Textur des historischen Film- und Fotomaterials.
A fascinating tour through the 20th century seen through the eyes of
a German sailor.
1914: The 14-year-old shipboy Hans Warns embarks on his first great voyage.
The destination is Chile: there the four-mast sailboat ‘Herbert’
from Hamburg is to take on a load of saltpetre for the German Empire.
World WarI is about to begin. With him on board the ship Hans has his
only possession – a camera.
Photography becomes his passion. During his long and varied life on numerous
trips across every ocean of the earth, unique picture documents depict
the every day life on board the sailboats, steamships, battle cruisers
and at different stations of his journey through life: internment during
World War I in Chile, return to inflation-ridden post-war Germany in 1921,
journeys to Egypt and Norway during the late twenties, concealed transport
trips for the ‘Legion Condor’ during the civil war in Spain
1936-1939, trips to Norway to break the blockade at the beginning of World
War II before 1940, trips to the South Atlantic on a big battle ship of
the German navy in 1940-41, the post-war period and his retirement years
in Bremen.
This feature film tells the story of Hans Warns’ adventurous life
using his own original photographs and a track with historical music and
sounds as well as reenacted sequences in the style of archive film and
photographs.
