Tristán Bauer, der sich in den 90er Jahren immer stärker literarischen Themen zugewandt hat, nutzte den 100. Geburtstag von Jorge Luis Borges, um den vielfältigen Kosmos dieses Weltgeistes filmisch zu erschließen. Dabei unternimmt er eine schwierige Gratwanderung zwischen fiktiver Rekonstruktion und Dokumentation. Es gelingt ihm, mit seltenem Archivmaterial das Leben eines der größten lateinamerikanischen Schriftsteller zu beleuchten, der gerade in dem Moment erblindete, als er zum Direktor der Nationalbibliothek ernannt wurde, man ihm “die Bücher und die Nacht zu leben gab”. In zahlreichen filmischen Zeugnissen und literarischen Zitaten belegt er das reiche poetische und erzählerische Schaffen des Autors und die ihm zugrunde liegende Philosophie. Aber er wagt sich auch daran, einzelne Lebensstationen und Metaphern von Borges’ Werk zu fiktionalisieren, und findet dabei mitunter atemberaubende Bilder, z.B. für das Labyrinth der Bibliothek, das zentrale Synonym für Borges’ eigene Existenz und das Universum schlechthin. In Los libros y la noche hat Tristán Bauer eine kongeniale filmische Umsetzung für den faszinierenden literarischen Kosmos dieser eindrucksvollen Gestalt der Weltliteratur geschaffen.	Tristán Bauer, who increasingly dedicated himself to literary themes in the nineties, chose the occasion of the one-hundredth anniversary of Jorge Luis Borges’ birth to explore in film the multifaceted cosmos of this ‘world spirit’. In so doing, he has chosen a fine line between fictitious reconstruction and documentation. Through the use of rare archive material, Bauer has succeeded in casting light on the life of one of Latin America’s greatest writers, a man who went blind just when he was appointed director of the National Library, when he was given ‘the books and the nights to live’. Numerous cinematic statements and literary quotes attest to Borges’ rich poetic and storytelling skill and its underlying philosophy. Bauer has also taken the brave step of fictionalising individual moments in Borges’ life and metaphors from his work, thereby producing some breathtaking images of, for example, the labyrinthine library, the central synonym of Borges’ own existence and the universe per se. Tristán Bauer’s The Books and the Night is a sympathetic cinematic portrayal of the fascinating cosmos of this great and impressive writer.
