One Piece!-Manifest.” So steht es im Vorspann des Werks von Shinobu Yaguchi, der – zusammen mit seinem Mitarbeiter Takuji Suzuki – seit der aberwitzigen Komödie Adrenaline Drive Fans in aller Welt Furore gemacht hat. Obwohl der Film als ein Schlag gegen die dänischen ‘Dogma’-Regeln verstanden werden kann, entstanden die einzelnen Folgen in Wirklichkeit ganz unabhängig, als kurze Video-Warmups für Yaguchis Spielfilmarbeit.
In den meisten Episoden sieht man junge Erwachsene, die in unglaublich erniedrigende Situationen versetzt werden: Eine Frau, die eine Anzeige falsch verstanden hat, erscheint in einem Hasenkostüm zum Vorstellungsgespräch; eine andere Frau hört mit an, wie ihre Freunde sich über ihre Ungepflegtheit mokieren; drei Freundinnen, die versuchen, ein Video über die Hochzeit einer Freundin zu drehen, gehen statt dessen mit der Kamera auf sie los. Fast alle sind völlig verrückt, und ihre statischen, perfekt komponierten Einstellungen verraten nichts von dem, was folgt.

So reads the title card appearing at the beginning of One Piece!, the creation of Shinobu Yaguchi whose lunatic comedy Adrenaline Drive is winning him fans the world over and his collaborator Takuji Suzuki. While it could be read as a thumb-in-the-eye to the pretentions of the Danish Dogme, the series was developed in isolation, as short video warm-ups for Yaguchis feature film work. But, like the motivation behind Dogme, this project seeks an immediacy in simple filmed experience. Unlike Dogme, though, the individual segments are truly bizarre and, often, very funny.
Most of the pieces involve young adults in hilariously humiliating situations. A woman who misread an ad shows up to a job interview in a bunny suit; a woman who hides to surprise her friends hears their dismissive insults about her hygiene; three friends trying to make a video celebrating another friends marriage lash out at her on camera. Some veer towards the surreal, like the piece called Grampa From Hell, or a segment about fake cult leaders. Almost all are totally off-the-wall, their static, perfectly composed shots betraying nothing of what is to follow.
But this is not just a series of cute shorts. As the work unfolds, a pattern begins to emerge. We quickly realize that these guys not only have a complete command of Japanese youth vernacular but have also found the perfect method of exposing the fears and aspirations of young Japans present and future. There is a kind of demented genius at work here that, guaranteed, only comes along once in a very long while.

Shinobu Yaguchi wurde 1967 geboren und studierte Graphikdesign an der Tokioter Hochschule für Kunst und Design. Bereits während des Studiums begann er eine Laufbahn als Filmemacher, drehte eine Anzahl von 8mm- und Videofilmen und arbeitete zeitweise als Ausstattungs-Assistent. Als Spielfilmregisseur debütierte er 1992 mit Down the Drain, den er u.a. dank eines Stipendiums des Pia Film Festivals realisieren konnte.
Takuji Suzuki wurde 1967 geboren. Er schrieb zusammen mit Shinobu Yaguchi die Drehbücher zu Down the Drain und My Secret Cache.
Shinobu Yaguchi was born in 1967 and enrolled in the Tokyo University of Art and Design as a design major, but he soon launched his career as a filmmaker. While turning out a number of 8mm and video works, Yaguchi took on part time jobs at film studios as an assistant to the production designer.
Yaguchis first feature film was Down the Drain which was made on a Pia Film Festivals scholarship program.
Takuji Suzuki was born in 1967.He collaborated on the screenplays Down the Drain and My Secret Cache with Shinobu Yaguchi.
