Third Known Nest ist ein Kompendium von neun kürzeren Arbeiten, von denen zwischen 1991 und 1999 jährlich eine fertiggestellt wurde. Verbunden durch neun Zitate meiner favorisierten Autoren, ist das Werk als ein intimes visuelles Tagebuch angelegt und liefert fragmentarische Bilder meines Alltagslebens. Wo immer ich mich herumtrieb, hatte ich eine Super8-Kamera bei mir, auch zu Hause, bei Besorgungen oder im Garten. Ich verfilmte fast einhundert Fünfzig-Fuß-Spulen.
Formal bewegt sich das Ganze zwischen Experimentalfilm und einem mehr popkulturellen Touch. Eigentlich nüchtern im Ton, wirken die einzelnen Arbeiten in der Zusammenschau doch zunehmend emotional, ja sogar sentimental und nostalgisch. Vor allem aber ist Third Known Nest eine Abfolge von Porträts von mir und den Menschen, die ich liebe, den lebenden und den toten.
Im Gegensatz zu meinen Spielfilmen sind diese kurzen Einzelteile die pure Befreiung, ein billiger, schneller Ausflug in die Freuden von Kamera und Montage.“ Tom Kalin

Third Known Nest is a collection of nine short works completed approximately one each year from 1991 to 1999. Interwoven by nine quotations from some of my favorite writers, the eighteen short entries in Third Known Nest function as an intimate visual diary fractured pictures from day-to-day life. I carried a Super-8 camera with me wherever I traveled, and at home, just running errands or in the garden. I shot nearly a hundred fifty-foot reels of film.
Formally, theyre somewhere in between experimental film und pop cultural spin. Though distinct in tone, the cumulative impact of these individual works becomes increasingly emotional, even sentimental or nostalgic. Most of all, Third Known Nest works as a gallery of portraits in flux of myself and the people that I love: some alive, some dead.
As a counterpart to my feature film work, these short pieces are pure liberation, a cheap, fast escape into the joys of the camera and montage. Tom Kalin

Biofilmographie / Biofilmography
Tom Kalin studierte zunächst Malerei. 1987 machte er seinen Master of Fine Arts in Photographie und Video an der School of the Art Institute of Chicago, 1987 bis 1988 war er Teilnehmer des Whitney Museum Independent Study Program.
Tom Kalin lebt als Drehbuchautor und Regisseur in New York und arbeitete drei Jahre lang als Produzent, Film- und Videomacher für Aids-Films, die Aufklärungsmaterial über Aids produziert und vertreibt. Er ist Gründungsmitglied des Aktivisten- und Künstlerkollektivs The Grand Fury.
Tom Kalin initially studied painting. In 1987, he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in photography and video production from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. From 1987 to 1988, he took part in the Whitney Museum of American Arts Independent Study Program. Tom Kalin lives in New York and works as a screenwriter and director. For three years, he worked as an associate director and producer for AIDSFILMS, which produces and distributes educational materials about AIDS. He is a founding member of the activists and artists collective The Grand Fury.
