Im Oktober 1998 wurde Johan van der Keuken von seinem Arzt mitgeteilt, daß er infolge einer Krebskrankheit nur noch wenige Jahre zu leben hätte. Jahrelang hatte er gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Nosh van der Lely die Welt bereist. Sie war für den Ton verantwortlich, er stand hinter der Kamera. Nun beschlossen die beiden, den kostbaren Rest ihrer Lebens damit zu verbringen, zu sehen und zu hören. Zu Weihnachten machten sie sich auf den Weg nach Bhutan. Johan van der Keuken betrachtete den Film, den sie machen wollten, als eine Art Chronik seiner ganz persönlichen Weltsicht, die ihm durch seinen drohenden Tod sehr dringlich geworden war. So wurde De grote Vakantie zu einer Art ‘road-air movie’. Van der Keuken und seine Frau reisten unermüdlich, und die Bewegung des Films wird durch die vielen Begegnungen mit verschiedenen Menschen aus verschiedenen Ländern und Gesellschaftsschichten charakterisiert. "Trotz aller Widrigkeiten weiterzuleben, mit Hilfe von wunderbaren Geschichten, die sich wie von selbst offenbaren und ein Trost im Angesicht des Nichts sind," wie van der Keuken in seinem Kommentar formuliert. Der Film ist eine Suche nach dem Gesicht des Nichts, eine Suche in der Hoffnung, einen Sinn und einen größeren Zusammenhang hinter allem zu entdecken. Die Haltung, trotz allem weiterzuleben, macht aus De grote Vakantie keinen düsteren, sondern einen ausgesprochen lebensbejahenden Film.	In October 1998, Johan van der Keuken heard that he only had a few years to live. Prostate cancer cells had taken hold in his body. He has travelled the world for years with his wife Nosh van der Lely. She held the microphone and recorder, he wielded the camera. Together they decided to spend the rest of their precious time looking and listening. At Christmas they set off for Bhutan. Johan van der Keuken regarded the film they were embarking on as a chronicle of his own view of the world, made all the more urgent by his own mortality. The Long Holiday became a kind of ‘road-air movie’. They travelled incessantly and the motion of the film is characterised by their many encounters with very different people from very different societies and cultures. “Living against all odds, with the aid of beautiful stories that tell themselves, as a comfort in the face of nothingness,” as Johan van der Keuken comments in the film. The film is a quest for the face of nothingness, in the hope that there is a point, a grander motive behind it all. People could say that the meaning is to be found in the movement itself and in the eyes that discern it, store it and pass it on to others.
