Ein alter Mann wird in die Notaufnahme gebracht: Er wurde von einem Blitzschlag getroffen. Alle haben bereits aufgehört zu arbeiten und sind nach Hause gegangen. Nur Yan, eine junge Ärztin, ist zurückgeblieben und hilft. Doch auf einmal eilen die Ärzte aller Stationen zurück und kümmern sich um den Patienten. Der alte Mann entpuppt sich als Sir Kau Kei Hot, ein großzügiger Förderer des Krankenhauses. Als er wieder zu sich kommt, entschließt er sich, das Krankenhaus zu reformieren, und übergibt Yan die Leitung. Doch sie stößt bald an die Grenzen ihrer Möglichkeiten, als ihre Kollegen und das Management des Krankenhauses nicht mitziehen, und erinnert sich nun an den legendären Joe, der das Krankenhaus vor längerer Zeit verließ … HELP!!! enthält Action, Romantik, den Kampf zwischen Gut und Böse. Alles scheint völlig außer Kontrolle zu geraten: die Autowerkstatt gleicht einer Notaufnahme, und dann sind da noch die raffinierten, aber unsichtbaren Verwaltungsangestellten des Krankenhauses. Der possenhafte Stil des Films verleiht dem zentralen Thema einen unterhaltsamen Touch. Von der ersten Szene an ist HELP!!! eine Satire auf Hongkongs problembelastetes Gesundheitswesen. An old man is taken to the emergency room after being struck by lightning. When everyone in the hospital leaves work, it is Yan who stays to help. Suddenly every doctor from every department rushes back to treat the old man. It turns out he is the hospital’s biggest donor – Sir Kau Kei Ho – who wants to reform the hospital and hands Yan the responsibility. Jim joins her to try to make a difference. But soon his determination wears off once he encounters opposition from his colleagues and the management. Yan then remembers one person who can help out – the legendary Joe who left the hospital some time ago… Help!!! has action, romance, and a good-vs.-evil struggle, but as To puts it, “everyone and everything in the story is out of control.” There’s Joe’s emergency room-like auto shop, Jim’s outrageous attire, Yan’s naïve vow, and who can forget the sneaky, invisible management staff? The farcical style of Help!!! situates the film’s central theme in an entertaining context. From the opening scene, Help!!! satirises Hong Kong’s problematic medical system. Help!!! is relentless in its exaggerated, often surprising plot and character development. The film’s energy continues to build up until it peaks in the end, revealing the ‘film-within-a-film’ twist: that everything which has appeared on-screen is simply part of a show. This revelatory conclusion, which echoes the ‘ER’-parody in the beginning of the film, directs the audience’s attention to the film’s ‘showy-ness’: its wild and illogical elements. By doing so, Help!!! lays bare the staged authenticity and the purported ‘true-to-life-ness’ of medicine films.
