| Hoa, ein 50jähriger Junggeselle, steht regelmäßig
Modell für die Studierenden der Kunsthochschule Hanoi. Seit er
als Junge im Garten seines Elternhauses von einem Guavenbaum fiel,
ist seine geistige Entwicklung auf dem Niveau eines 13jährigen
stehengeblieben, und er lebt ganz in seinen Kindheitserinnerungen.
Seine Schwester kümmert sich um ihn, der nicht immer realisiert,
daß er nun an einem anderen Ort wohnt. Er versucht immer wieder,
in sein altes Zuhause zurückzukehren. Als er eines Tages die
Gartenmauer übersteigt, um ein paar Guaven zu pflücken,
wird er verhaftet und nur dank der Fürsprache einer Studentin
wieder freigelassen. Hoas aufrichtiges Wesen rührt sie, und sie
beschließt, ihn in ihrem Haus – dem Haus seiner Kindheit
– aufzunehmen. Als aber ihr Vater von dem Eindringling erfährt,
verlangt er dessen Einweisung in eine psychiatrische Klinik… Dang Nhat Mins Film verknüpft persönliche und Welt-Geschichte. Der Wunsch eines einfältigen Mannes, seine Kindheit wiederzufinden, und seine Weigerung erwachsen zu werden, spiegeln die Agonie eines Landes, das daran scheitert, einen Schlußstrich unter seine schwierige Vergangenheit zu ziehen, um mit seiner Gegenwart zu leben. |
Hoa is a single man in his fifties who regularly poses
for the students at Hanoi’s art school. After falling from the
guava tree in the yard of his family home, he lost his mental faculties
and his mind is still the one of a boy of 13. He has been locked in
his childhood memories ever since. His little sister, who is now married,
takes care of Hoa, who does not always seem to be aware of the fact
that he has changed homes. Obsessed with the idea of returning to
his old home, he breaks into the garden by climbing over the wall,
wanting to pick some guavas. Arrested by the police, he is let go
thanks to the intervention of a female student who lives in the beautiful
old building. Moved by Hoa’s genuine and kind nature, she decides
to let him stay in the house which was once his. But when her father
learns of the presence of the intruder in his house, he demands Hoa
be interned in a psychiatric hospital.. Dang Nhat Minh’s latest film mixes personal and world histories through a fluid, sombre and serene direction heightened by the use of widescreen Cinemascope. The quest of a simple-minded man who wants to return to his childhood and refuses to grow up echoes the death throes of a country which is failing to wipe clean the slate of its past struggles to live with its present. |

Dang Nhat Minh was born on 11 May 1938 and started his career in
1965 as a documentary film-maker. He switched to feature films in
1973. Since then, he has made twelve movies set against the backdrop
of Vietnam’s turbulent history. Tro Ve (The Return) follows
the fate of former boat people sent back to Saigon only to discover
the negative aspects of the new free economy. Ha Noi: Mua Dong Nam
1946 (Hanoi – Winter 1946) is a sophisticated portrait of Ho
Chi Minh as well as of the war of independance against the French.
A writer and journalist, Minh is also the general secretary of the
Vietnam Cinema Association. |
