One Christmas Eve, thirty-year-old housewife Mi-Heun has her world shattered by the discovery that her quiet country doctor husband is a womaniser fixated on having sex with women when he goes fishing at the nearby lake. Swept away to the peaceful town of Butterfly Ville, Mi-Heun and her family go on as if nothing had happened, but the aftermath of that night still haunts Mi-Heun with headaches as she vexatiously tries to cure her heartache alone. Then one day she meets In-Kyu and is propositioned with a dangerous game of sex that would never allow for love. At first, she refuses with all her might, but soon she falls into it body and soul. In the meantime, Mi-Heun’s husband Hyo-Kyung has been wanting to make a pond outside their house for a while, in the hope that cultivating a backyard pond with fish might help them forget about everything and be happy again. “Ardor is a film about an intense love rather than an illicit love. I wanted to show just how intense love can be and how captivating love is because of it. This kind of love is an enchantment that cannot be denied and something that can change lives passionately and dramatically. An einem Weihnachtsabend zerbricht die heile Welt der 30jährigen Hausfrau Mi-Heun, als sie entdeckt, dass ihr Ehemann ein Schürzenjäger ist: Der Landarzt pflegt die Frauen auf dem Weg zum See, an dem er gern fischt, zu verführen. Nach dem sie in das friedliche Städtchen Butterfly Ville umgezogen sind, leben Mi-Heun und ihre Familie weiter so, als ob nichts geschehen sei. Seit jener Nacht wird Mi-Heun jedoch von Kopfschmerzen geplagt, denn sie versucht allein mit ihrem Kummer fertig zu werden. Eines Tages lernt sie In-Kyu kennen, der ihr ein gefährliches Spiel vorschlägt, in dem alles erlaubt ist, außer Liebe. Zunächst sträubt sie sich, doch bald ergibt sie sich dem Abenteuer mit Leib und Seele. In der Zwischenzeit macht ihr Mann Hyo-Kyung sich daran, hinter dem Haus einen Fischteich anzulegen, weil er hofft, dass sie beide mit Hilfe dieses symbolischen Akts wieder glücklich werden. „Mil-ae ist eher ein Film über eine intensive als über eine verbotene Liebe. Ich wollte einfach zeigen, wie faszinierend dieses Gefühl der Liebe sein kann, welchen Reiz es ausübt und wie Leidenschaft das Leben dramatisch verändert. Ich wollte die Empfindsamkeit der Menschen in der Situation einer solchen leidenschaftlichen Liebe auf eine mitfühlende Weise zum Ausdruck bringen.“ Byun Young-Joo

Byun Young-Joo, geb. 1966 in Seoul. Jurastudium an der Ewha Women’s University. Zunächst seit 1990 Dokumentarfilme über die sog. ‘Comfort Women’, im Forum: Nazn moksori/The Murmuring/ Leise Stimmen (1995), Nazn moksori 2/Habitual Sadness /Leise Stimmen 2 (1997). Mil-ae ist ihr Spielfilmdebüt.
