In China zur Zeit der Ming Dynastie hat die Vorsehung zwei Geschwisterpaare für einander bestimmt. Doch auf ihrem Weg zum gemeinsamen Glück hält das Schicksal unzählige Hindernisse für sie bereit. Das eine Geschwisterpaar ist von edler Abkunft: Der junge Kaiser Zheng De und seine Schwester Wushuang dürfen die Mauern des kaiserlichen Palastes nicht verlassen. Das andere Geschwisterpaar kommt aus den Niederungen der Gesellschaft: Der ruhelose Li Yilong ist auch als King Bully bekannt, weil er als Jugendlicher in der Stadt Meilong sein Unwesen trieb, und seine Schwester Phoenix betreibt noch immer ein Restaurant in Meilong. Zahlreiche Verwechslungen, Komplikationen und Missverständnisse entstehen. Geschlechterrollen werden vertauscht, gesellschaftliche Unterschiede scheinen nur schwer überbrückbar, und die wechselnde Identität und das Selbstbewusstsein der Protagonisten übertönen die Stimme der Leidenschaft. „Ich liebe es, die Wellen hoch schlagen zu lassen, die Dinge zu verdrehen und ein allgemeines Gefühl von Chaos zu verbreiten. Außerdem bin ich gern etwas rätselhaft. Und habe Spaß daran, meine Filme zu machen. Bei den Dreharbeiten zu Chinese Odyssey 2002 hatte ich sehr viel Spaß. Der Film besitzt alle Merkmale meiner früheren Komödien, ist aber zugleich auch sehr romantisch.“ Jeff Lau

In Ming Dynasty China, two pairs of siblings are destined for each other. But fate throws countless obstacles in the path of their happiness. One pair is high-born: the young Emperor and his sister Wushuang, both confined to the Imperial Palace and very much under the thumb of their mother, the Empress Dowager. The other pair is decidedly low-born: the wanderer Li Yilong (known as King Bully for the way he terrorised the town of Meilong in his youth) and his sister Phoenix, who still runs a restaurant in Meilong. When both the young Emperor and his sister Wushuang contrive to leave the Palace and head south, they meet the loves of their lives in Meilong. But Wushuang has disguised herself as a man, and the Emperor is incognito. Numerous confusions, complications and misunderstandings ensue: genders and gender-roles are reversed, class differences prove hard to negotiate and identities and egos block the promptings of desire. It takes the interventions of a goddess to get everyone back on the right road. But it may be already too late to heal the wounds of disappointment and separation. “I like making waves, turning things inside- out, upside-down, creating a general sense of chaos. I also like being something of an enigma. And I have fun making my films. It’s my belief that if I have fun, you will too. I had great fun making Chinese Odyssey 2002.
