Ihre Beobachtungen, Gespräche und die tagebuchförmigen Reflexionen vermitteln ein widersprüchliches Bild vom Alltag der Menschen, dem fast religiösen Personenkult und der Bedeutung der Vergangenheit. Pyongyang Diaries records the Solrun Hoaas' personal encounter with the closed society of North Korea, first in the Fourth Pyongyang Film Festival in 1994, only three months after Kim Il Sung's death, and then during a return visit in 1996 both as tourist and participant in the same festival, after floods had seriously damaged crops two years in a row. Through observations, conversations and reflections in personal diary form, the film conveys an image of the people. Despite evident contradictions, the audience gets a sense that there are individual human beings living in a very restrictive regime who are eager for more contact with the outside world.
