Mitternacht in einem Rundfunkstudio, kurz vor der Live-Sendung des Hörspiels 'Die Frau des Schicksals'. Da verlangt die Sprecherin der Hauptrolle, daß ihr Rollenname in Mary Jane geändert wird. Alle Mitarbeiter geraten in Panik, denn der ausländische Name bringt die Geschichte völlig durcheinander, zumal bei laufender Sendung ständig neue Ideen für überraschende Wendungen entstehen.Warum nicht die Story ein wenig aufpeppen und die Mafia und Maschinengewehre ins Spiel bringen? Oder den Handlungsort verlegen, diesmal nach Chicago? Sollte Mary Janes Geliebter nicht eher Pilot sein? Aus dem von seiner Autorin tiefempfundenen Melodram über eine sich auflösende Ehe wird eine wilde Actiongeschichte. ''Unter einem falschen Regisseur hätte diese Story sehr albern werden können, Mitani aber hat die Leistungen seiner Schauspieler auf Hochglanz gebracht. Zeitgefühl, Erzählfluß und Ton stimmen genau. Gemeinsam mit seinem Kameramann Kenji Takama hat er den dialogreichen Szenen neuen Auftrieb gegeben… Radio no jikan erinnert sehr an The Twentieth Century, das Meisterwerk unter den Screwball-Lustspielen. Doch obwohl diese brillante Komödie Hollywood in Stil und Wesen sehr nahe steht, sagt sie mehr über Japans Gesellschaftsstrukturen aus als jeder andere Film der letzten Jahre.'' It is midnight at a radio station. The rehearsal for a radio drama 'The Woman of the Fate' proceeded smoothly and everyone in the studio has only to wait for the programme to go on air. At this crucial moment, the leading actress suddenly demands that her role name be changed. Right before going on air, the entire staff and cast are in panic because of this selfish request. The broadcast begins, but the change of the character's name throws the entire story into chaos. Now that the main character is a foreigner, the setting has to be changed from Atami to New York and all other characters have to become Americans. Even after the show goes on air, the star and the rest of the cast keep coming up with bright ideas. Why not juice up the story by adding the Mafia and machine guns? Why not change the setting again, to Chicago? Why not make Mary Jane's lover a pilot? Why not indeed? ''In the wrong hands, this material could have been simply silly, but Mitani has polished the performances of his actors to a sheen. Timing, pace and tone are all spot on. Also, working with cinematographer Kenji Takama, he has filmed his talky script with a seamless dynamism that energizes what could have been static scenes. Welcome back, Mr. McDonald roars along much like that masterpiece of showbiz screwball comedy The Twentieth Century. But while being, in style and manner, closer to Hollywood than even the comedies of Juzo Itami, it dissects the inner workings of Japanese social relations with a finer scalpel than almost any film in recent memory.''
