In June, Ralf Schenk presents the latest book in the DEFA Foundation series, "Cui bono, Fred Gehler? – Texte und Kritiken aus fünf Jahrzehnten" (Publisher: Ralf Schenk). Fred Gehler has been writing about film history since the end of the 1950s and his reviews have earned him a highly-valued reputation among cineastes. For his 75th birthday, the DEFA Foundation is publishing a selection of the best written texts: A journey through the history of the DEFA as well as through international, especially Soviet, Polish and Hungarian, film.
Two film essays by Fred Gehler about the directors Conrad Veidt and Gerhard Klein will also be presented: CONRAD VEIDT – EIN SPIEGELMENSCH (Germany 1992) and DER LIEBE GOTT IN BERLIN. GERHARD KLEIN 1920 – 1970(Germany 1997). Afterwards, at Fred Gehler's request, DIE RUSSEN KOMMEN (The Russians are Coming, Heiner Carow, DDR 1968/87) about the last days of the war in a village on the German Baltic coast will be screened. (4.6., Fred Gehler will be our guest)
