THE BATTLE OF THE SACRED TREE is a liberal adaptation of a short story by the bestselling author Barbara Kimenye. It was filmed in a Kenyan village with Kenyan actors. The language spoken is sometimes English, sometimes Kiswahili, and the music was made by Senegalese musician Mamadou Mbaye. Mumbi leaves Nairobi and her husband because he beats her. Back in her ancestral village, she falls in with a Christian women's group. They are determined to eradicate all traces of pre-colonial beliefs and are annoyed by a magnificent tree, which the villagers believe has supernatural powers. A cunning mayor and an amorous tailor come to Mumbi's aid. (Cristina Nord)
