  • Introduction (in engl. language): Wanjiru Kinyanjui

Moussa is a student at the Technische Universität in West Berlin. Though he is occasionally seen with friends and other West African expats, he is mainly alone, doing odd jobs, cooking or cleaning his apartment. At home, he reads letters from family members and his partner in Senegal. These letters structure the film, which weaves fiction and documentary, the essay and the epistolary novel. MAN SA YAY tells of the weight of responsibility for relatives back home, the pressure of unfulfillable expectations and racism towards migrants in Berlin in the early 1980s. And of the recurring question: “When will you return?” (bik)
