One of Ray’s most beautiful works, this melodrama is about the titular protagonist, who is lonely in her huge house and within her marriage in equal measure. She tries to distract herself via embroidery, books and observing people. Through golden opera glasses, she follows the events of the outside world that play out in front of her window. When her husband notices her isolation, he invites his cousin, literature student Amal, to live with them, provide company for Charulata and boost her literary abilities.
