Lina Wertmüller’s brilliant debut received the Prize for Best Direction at the 1963 Locarno Film Festival. Stylistically unique in her oeuvre, its grotesque brand of neorealism was shot in semi-documentary fashion in a small town in the province of Basilicata, where people live from day to day without any real initiative and focus more on speaking instead: about personal dreams they still haven’t given up on and yet will never realize; about the women who they chase but are never allowed to speak to because convention forbids it.
