Mia wears a head brace that collects her saliva in small glass containers. It is then used to make dentures out of ice, which have to be replaced every day. Albert, who lives with Mia in an apartment with dark rooms, a painting and a display case full of red glasses, is responsible for this daily routine. There is hardly any dialogue—but there is much to hear, including a trance-like musical leitmotif and mainly sounds. When Albert learns that he has to give Mia away, a journey into his unconscious begins. Brian Catling's fantasy novel becomes a labyrinthine, enigmatic horror story with artistic images in diffuse twilight, a world that is more a landscape of the soul than a real place. (bik)
