Film critic and author J. Hoberman presents his new book Everything Is Now: The 1960s New York Avant-Garde—Primal Happenings, Underground Movies, Radical Pop, which chronicles the cultural history of 1960s New York, when subcultures merged into a shared counterculture. Key figures include Bob Dylan, Allen Ginsberg, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Carolee Schneemann, Jack Smith and Andy Warhol. Referring to a selection of films, Hoberman discusses the censorship measures to which the cinematic underground was subjected.
WINDOW WATER BABY MOVING by Stan Brakhage (USA 1959) is a poetic documentary about the birth of Stan and Jane Brakhage’s first child. Barbara Rubin’s CHRISTMAS ON EARTH (USA 1963) is considered one of the most provocative films of the North American avant-garde. It will be screened as a double 16mm projection. Jonas Mekas’ THE BRIG (USA 1964) is a film document of a The Living Theatre play depicting the abuse and humiliation of inmates at a Marine Corps military jail. (Stefanie Schulte Strathaus)
