As part of our Making Space series, the Deutsche Kinemathek will be our guest in August. Artistic Director Heleen Gerritsen will present the world premiere of a new restoration: EINE FRAU MIT VERANTWORTUNG by Ula Stöckl tells the story of Helga, who is constantly forced to “take on responsibility” while growing up from 12 to 22 – responsibility as defined for her by her family and society. This means running the household for her father as a student, having the child she doesn’t want and marrying the man she never wanted to marry. Stöckl herself summarizes the ending as follows: “Psychologically, she secretly slips into an illness: an obsessive-compulsive disorder which manifests itself as a compulsion to clean turns her into a person in need of care.”
Following the screening, Ula Stöckl, Heleen Gerritsen, and Stefanie Schulte Strathaus will discuss the importance of spaces for free discourse in cinema—both historically and in the present—and the role that film restorations play in this context. (Stefanie Schulte Strathaus)
