Marker’s medium-length science-fiction film is widely regarded as a classic of the photo film genre, its visual universe depicting a post-apocalyptic world in the aftermath of a war. From among a small group of survivors, an unnamed man is sent on a journey through time into the past to procure food and energy sources. There he meets a woman from his memories and begins a love affair with her. The film’s soundtrack is just as enigmatic and unsettling as the intense black-and-white still images, consisting of three elements that occasionally overlap: a voiceover, a wide variety of atmospheric sounds ranging from airplane noises to birdsong, the sound design of a crucial scene in the film, and a composition that takes up the leitmotif from Hitchcock’s Vertigo – a tribute to the film that had the greatest influence on Marker. ON VOUS PARLEDE PARIS: MASPERO, LES MOTS ONT UN SENS will be shown beforehand. (mg)
