Like a visual elegy, MY MEMORY IS FULL OF GHOSTS (Anas Zawahri, Syria 2024 | 21.7.) explores a reality in the Syrian city of Homs that is caught between the past, present and future. Behind the portrait of a drained population in search of normality, memories of a city characterized by destruction, disfigurement and loss emerge. Some of the earliest and most intense protests took place in Homs before the city endured a devastating siege between 2011 and 2014. It is considered the “capital of the revolution” and was at the center of the Syrian uprising. Years later, director Anas Zawahri captures the reality of those who remained in the city forever changed by war and those who returned to it. Through patient observation and static camera compositions, the film shows how war not only changes landscapes, but also the structure of memory itself.
