City Kino Wedding:
Explorations of the unconscious – the films of Lucile Hadžihalilović

Lucile Hadžihalilović (born 1961) is an extraordinary filmmaker. With only four feature films in 20 years, she has developed an unmistakable signature style and created an artistic universe that is unparalleled in contemporary French cinema. With a distinctive stylistic vision and artfully created images, she creates mysterious, secluded settings in which to explore, over and over again, the transition from childhood and adolescence to adulthood. Her tales depend fully on the visual force of the imagery, with dialogue taking a back seat. They are characterized by fairy-tale motifs, the fantastic and the uncanny, and are not anchored in a specific time, let alone in reality. They are explorations of the unconscious, always accompanied by a touch of horror – a very unique aesthetic form of genre cinema.

Ahead of the theatrical release of LA TOUR DE GLACE, which won the award for outstanding artistic achievement at the 2025 Berlinale, Arsenal presents a retrospective of Hadžihalilović's four feature films, which were made between 2004 and 2025, as part of French Film Week, in the presence of Lucile Hadžihalilović. Three of them were never screened on a regular basis in Germany. (Birgit Kohler)
