FLOTEL EUROPA by Vladimir Tomic has received the award for best documentary debut at Jihlava International Documentary Festival.

The film had its world premiere during this year's Berlinale Forum, where it received the award of the Tagessiegel readers' jury.

Edited together from VHS footage shot in the early 90s on a floating holding centre for Bosnian refugees in the harbour of Copenhagen, Tomic's autobiographical documentary blossoms into the nostalgic account of a youth between two worlds.

The 46th Berlinale Forum will be taking place from 11-21 February 2016 as part of the 66th Berlinale. Deadline for film submissions is October 31, 2015.

Together with Filmgalerie 451, we are publishing two new DVDs that include comprehensive booklets. These both present the films of Klaus Telscher, which were published in collaboration with the European Media Art Festival Osnabrück, and the state theatre films by Daniel Kötter and Constanze Fischbeck.

"Klaus Telscher first appeared with the film ENTWICKLUNGSSTÜCKE (1979/80) at a time when a German experimental film was starting to blossom again. Telscher’s rich, original, witty, subtle, and sometimes cryptic work is characterized by a desire for the technically unorthodox and the sounding out of "unsuccessful" images; at the same time, the obsessive use of musical fragments and the eclectic references to photography and film history are equally typical of his style. His last film LA REPRISE was released in 1995. In 1988, he appeared in Stephan Sachs' Alpine film PARAMOUNT as an actor and was the cinematographer for Noll Brinckmann's 1989 Empathie und panische Angst". (Chr. N. Brinckmann)

state-theatre is a modular art project about the urban planning conditions of the performative based on the six case studies of LAGOS, TEHRAN, BERLIN, DETROIT, BEIRUT and MÖNCHENGLADBACH. These six experimental documentaries examine the relationship between urban space, architecture, and its performative usage. The first trilogy LAGOS, TEHRAN and BERLIN places a focus on temporarily used state and national theatres, while the second trilogy DETROIT, BEIRUT and MÖNCHENGLADBACH is centered around the question of alternative assembly spaces in cities in the grip of processes of transformation and, more generally, the performative quality of places of urban encounter. How does the question of spaces for cultural assembly change where there is no longer a theatre architecture or when there has never been one in the first place?

Nine theaters across Germany present films from our project "Asynchronous. Documentaries and Experimental Films on the Holocaust from the Arsenal Collection" over the next months: Kinemathek Karlsruhe (6.–31.10.), Filmpalette Köln (7.10.–8.11.), Cineding Leipzig (19.–21.10.), Caligari FilmBühne Wiesbaden (19.10–24.11.), Kino des Deutschen Filmmuseums Frankfurt a.M. (21.–28.10.), Filmmuseum Potsdam (3.–8.11.), Kommunales Kino Freiburg (6.–22.11.), Offkino Filmhaus Bielefeld and Werkstattkino München.

On December 1, Carsten Zimmer and Gesa Knolle present the project as part of the "Erinnerungsbilder" film series at the Kino im Künstlerhaus in Hannover, followed by a screening of HA’MAKAH HA’SHMONIM VE’AHAT (THE 81ST BLOW, Israel 1975).

2015 is dedicated to the remembrance of the victims of National Socialism. For this reason, Arsenal has put together a selection of 46 documentary and experimental films from its collection that not only grapple with the Holocaust but also with such themes as exile and forced labor during the National Socialist era. With the support of the Stiftung Deutsche Klassenlotterie Berlin, ten films from the project have also been digitized so that they also remain visible for coming generations. These ten films as well as all 36 others are available to cinemas, cultural, and educational institutions for their own programs as well as for school screenings. Part of the project also involved a collaboration with the film studies seminar "Remembering the Holocaust in Cinema" at the Freie Universität Berlin to create an accompanying publication.

To bring the project to a close, we are showing a program of eleven films from 1.10 until 9.11. The screenings will be accompanied by Q&As with international guests and introductions. A panel discussion on October 2 will be exploring the question of what remembrance work might look like in the future and what role audiovisual media can play in the process.
