This film essay is based on a collection of pins inherited by the granddaughter of Carlos Alberto Plácido de Sousa (1925–2013), a doctor, long-time member of the Portuguese Communist Party and central figure in the struggle against the fascist regime in Portugal.
Found in the attic of the abandoned family home, the pins hold memories of his exile in England, his participation in the historic Peniche Escape in 1960 and his activism through “The Portuguese and Colonial Bulletin”, a publication that denounced the Portuguese colonialist regime. These small seemingly harmless objects are material vestiges of a political and emotional past, evoking stories of struggles and silvered memories.
Filme Pin turns the pins into visual and auditory protagonists, exploring their textures, reflections and hidden narratives yet to be found. Shot in Super 8, the film emphasises the physicality of the image and its relationship with the materiality of the objects. Macro photography and tactile lighting transform each pin into a cinematic and sculptural memory of solidarity between people.
