With the move to the new location at silent green Kulturquartier in the Wedding district of Berlin, all the different parts of Arsenal – cinema, festival, exhibition, distribution and archive – are now under one roof. The concentration of all these activities here forms the basis for the idea of the institute: to allow film curatorial practice, theoretical engagement and target-group oriented educational approaches to truly dovetail and to conceive of these different fields as a visibly dynamic ensemble.
A holistic profile for the future of film culture
The Arsenal Filminstitut is dedicated to strengthening the role of media competence and film culture in society. The focus here is on passing on film historical and film aesthetic knowledge and fostering exchange between the areas of festival production, cinema programming and archival and distribution work. The institute develops and maintains innovate, lasting formats for film culture and promotes international dialogue on contemporary cinema and film cultural heritage in times of far-reaching transformation processes.
At the same time, Arsenal is committed to the long-term preservation of film holdings: through digitization and restoration projects, through curatorial and academic work and through training programs that make historical materials accessible and open up new perspectives on the present.
New synergies and becoming a fixture in the neighborhood
“With the location at silent green, which has already been home to the Arsenal archive since 2015, comprehensive spatial and technical possibilities open up new conceptual and structural perspectives for collaboration and the continuing development of experimental curatorial formats. We see an outstanding setup here with huge potential to carry Arsenal and its 63-year-old history into an active future”, commented Stefanie Schulte Strathaus and Stefan Aue, who together form the Arsenal board of directors. A point of reference to this end is silent green Film Feld Forschung, a project which was always intended to be of a lasting character and has already produced joint exhibition projects and film programs in the past, including ones on Agnès Varda and Derek Jarman and Film Culture magazine.
With the move to Wedding, Arsenal becomes part of a closely-knit neighborhood structure. Arsenal’s self-conception as an educational institution that seeks itself to learn creates the necessary prerequisite for open collaboration with local stakeholders and the development of shared, inclusive formats for a lively community.
The new cinema auditorium in the Westhalle of silent green will be the key connecting element between and centerpiece of these synergies. The opening is planned for April 2026.
