Double Projection: Torse

TORSE, 1977

As part of the "Maryanne Amacher: Intelligent Life" exhibition (DAAD-Galerie, July 14 – August 25), Arsenal has organized a rare screening of the double projection TORSE (director: Charles Atlas, choreography: Merce Cunningham, music: Maryanne Amacher, USA 1977). Amacher (1938–2009) was one of the most influential personalities in contemporary music. She worked with John Cage and Merce Cunningham and was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT in Cambridge, MA (USA). The focus of her research was the relationship between sound, space and the body. TORSE shows a performance of Merce Cunningham’s complex choreography filmed over three days with several cameras from different angles. Both as a document and an independent work, it sheds light on the unique form of collaboration between the artists involved. The screening includes an introduction. (August 22)
