Film documentary: 60 years after the Algerian War

Today, it comes as a surprise perhaps that thousands of West Germans fought on the French side during the Algerian War but for several years this fact was the object of a dispute between the two Germanies. Focusing on the enlistment of mercenaries, Karl Gass's ALLONS ENFANTS… POUR L'ALGERIE (GDR 1961) makes the connection between what seems like a distant conflict and Germany's present in the 1960s. The tone that the film strikes is also surprising. Whereas most agitprop films about the Algerian War portray the armed struggle of the National Liberation Front (FLN) in heroic terms, Gass combines the theme of the German mercenary with the portrait of a woman from the ranks of the FLN and depicts her daily struggle.
