The face as an event

LES YEUX SANS VISAGE, 1959

In June, three further events are taking place in conjunction with the seminar "The Face as an Event. Facial Semantics in Film," which Mona Körte is running at the Center for Literary and Cultural Research in Berlin (ZfL) at the TU. The films will be introduced by ZfL employees and there will be an opportunity for debate after each screening.

FACE/OFF (John Woo, USA 1997, 14.6., introduced by Irmela Krüger-Fürhoff, "Changing faces") This is a fast-paced action film in which the paths of the vile terrorist Troy (the villain is played with visible pleasure by Nicholas Cage) and FBI head Archer (John Travolta) cross. However, it is much more about the face transplants of its protagonists. Imbedded in a choreography of violence and stylized shoot-outs, the combination of new faces in old bodies triggers a surge of shifting identities.

LES YEUX SANS VISAGE (Eyes Without a Face, Georges Franju, France/Italy 1959, 21.6., introduced by Anne-Kathrin Reulecke, "Losing face") is an early horror film about a distinguished doctor (Pierre Brasseur) who causes a car accident, in which his daughter's face is completely disfigured. Acting out of a mixture of guilt, altruism and fantasies revolving around medical experimentation, he begins to murder young women in order to apply their faces to his daughter.

GUELWAAR (Ousmane Sembène, Senegal/France 1992, 28.6., introduced by Dirk Naguschewski, "Black faces") As the result of a misunderstanding, the body of the Catholic politician Guelwaar is buried in a Muslim cemetery according to Muslim rituals. When the mistake comes to light, the Catholic family insists on the body being exhumed. The argument between the two groups escalates. This is a film about the explosive potential when religions cohabit side by side, about development aid and corruption, about state violence and abuse of power, unemployment and emigration.
