The Spanish Civil War 80 Years Ago

Between July 1936 and April 1939, a civil war raged in Spain between the government of the Second Republic and the supporters of the fascist General Franco. Germans also fought on both sides. The 1979 documentary UNVERSÖHNLICHE ERINNERUNGEN by three graduates of the Berlin Filmakademie creates a portrait of two men who took part in the war on different fronts. One was a bricklayer who had to leave Germany in 1933 due to his Communist views and joined the International Brigade. The other was a retired army general who registered as a volunteer with the Condor Legion. The film contrasts these two men’s statements. Without using any sort of commentary, a multilayered portrait of German history and the present develops.  (Tobias Ebbrecht).
