The DEFA Foundation Presents

KARBID UND SAUERAMPFER, 1963 (Picture: Heinz Wenzel)

New cinema meets "old" DEFA films – Axel Ranisch presents: on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the founding of DEFA in May 2016, the DEFA Foundation is inviting young directors to present DEFA films that have particularly impressed and influenced them. KARBID UND SAUERAMPFER (Frank Beyer, East Germany 1963): An equal parts funny and dramatic odyssey by a Dresden worker who seeks to get hold of carbide for his factory shortly after the end of the war. A turbulent firework display of quirky scenes, glittering punch lines, and cheeky political over- and undertones. Erwin Geschonneck finally made his breakthrough in the role of the wily raw food eater "carbide Kalle". EINFACH BLUMEN AUFS DACH (Roland Oehme, East Germany 1979): the accidental acquisition of a worn-out Tschaika state coach helps a family father gain a new social status. When his newfound standing goes to his head however, he receives food for thought from his colleagues. The film reveals the spirit of subservience and the belief in authority in cheerfully satirical fashion. (jr) (7.11.)
