FilmDokument: Looking for the Traces of a History of the Individual.
Helke Misselwitz's Student Films

Between 1978 and 1982, Helke Misselwitz studied directing at the HFF Potsdam-Babelsberg All the student films of the budding DEFA documentarian grapple with Germany’s past. Two of them can be seen as a closed complex of works and anticipate Helke Misselwitz subsequent oeuvre. The films are based on a box from the Ufa film distribution company rescued from the trash that contained photos and letters by Berlin baker Maria Bartel. This finding was explored in documentary fashion on the one hand (EIN LEBEN) and served as the same time as the basis for her graduation film DIE FIDELE BÄCKERIN on the other, which is also her first feature.
