Filmspotting. Exploring the Deutsche Kinemathek’s Film Archive

DIE BUDDENBROOKS, 1923

In 1923, Gerhard Lamprecht, founding director of the Deutsche Kinemathek, adapted Thomas Mann’s merchant family saga “Die Buddenbrooks” as a tinted chamber drama with historical footage of Lübeck. Even if Thomas Mann wasn’t entirely convinced by the result due to the stripped-down plot, the film received considerable praise from the critics of the time. Lamprecht wrote the script together with Alfred Fekete and renowned screenwriter Luise Heilborn-Körbitz, who he had collaborated with previously. To coincide with the “Kino der Moderne. Film in der Weimarer Republik” exhibition, the 1999 restored 35mm version will be shown with a live piano accompaniment by Eunice Martins. With an introduction by Kristina Jaspers, curator of the exhibition. (ah) (26.8.)
