The young Kusum and Nimal love each other and attempt to ignore the fact that Kusum belongs to a “lower” caste. Kusum works for Nimal’s mother during vacations, who disapproves of the relationship. Plagued by feelings of guilt, Kusum breaks up with Nimal. Even when they meet again at school later on—he has become a teacher in the meantime—it is impossible for them to live out their love. Peries directs this simple, heartrendingly sad story with great sensitivity and in enchanting images.
