The scenes set in the Middle East were largely shot in Morocco. The film draws a line from the world of Great Britain of the Victorian era and the restrictions it placed on the ambitions of self-confident women to the First World War and the post-war order established in the Arab world by drawing dead-straight lines in the sand. For a Herzog film, the story is narrated in a comparatively linear way.
