The first film made by Julien Duvivier during his time in exile in the US is the portrait of a self-confident and self-determined woman in late 19th-century high society, who dedicates her life to philanthropy and helping blind children, forgetting about marriage. Though it is a loose remake of UN CARNET DE BAL, it is not about the botched lives of former suitors, but about the fact that these were all chasing the ideal of a woman without actually being interested in her.
