An amour fou that leads its lovers to retreat from the world: the outlaw Berg-Ejvind uses a false name to find work with a widowed farmer who he falls in love with. When his rival finds out about his past and wants to have him arrested, the couple flee into a barren mountain landscape that is far away from any sort of civilization. The ongoing threat to their existence by society and natural dangers take their toll. (mg)
