Three explorations of female desire, three instances of unfulfilled love. The film is set at three crucial times in the turbulent 20th century and in three different locations, each of which represents places of longing: the aristocratic Maya's Black Sea, the young Nana's rooftops above Tbilisi, the construction site of a large sports hall in the architect Rusudan's modernizing Georgia. In her debut film, made despite the censors, Gogoberidze uses expressionistic images and a seemingly weightless camera to tell the story of women living their passions in a self-determined way. When words fail, the expressive faces filmed close-up speak of feelings. (al)
