Wilhelm Hein, one of the forefathers of underground and avant-garde film, created an opus magnum: Das große und das kleine Tohuwabohu (Tohuwabohu Big and Small). It was made between 1995 and 2018 and comprises 100 films, each lasting one hour. In order to make tangible the time frame, in which it emerged, we are showing reel 1 and reel 96. Half a century ago, in 1974, Wilhelm Hein spoke during the Berlinale Forum at the Delphi about the potential of experimental film and the difficulties of giving it a place in the film landscape. "Das große und das kleine Tohuwabohu" was, in his words, "the renewed attempt to show what subversive avant-garde cinema is capable of." His promise: "A GUARANTEE FOR THE AUDIENCE: NOT MORE BORING AVANTGARDE RUBBISH."

Film scholar Marc Siegel will lead the post-screening discussion with Wilhelm Hein. (stss)
