We kick off with ARIEL: Like many other Kaurismäki films, the  second part of the “Proletariat Trilogy” (between Shadows in Paradise and The Match Factory Girl) screened in the 1989 Berlinale’s Forum section, organized by Arsenal. With his usual laconic style, Kaurismäki tells the story of Tiasto who loses his job at a the mine in Lapland when it closes down. He drives to Helsinki in a Cadillac to seek his fortune there. He meets traffic policewoman Irmeli and her young son, finds work as a day laborer and ends up in prison, but ultimately he finds a way out and towards a more hopeful life.
